Food is any material consumed in order to provide nutrition to an organism. Basically, food is of either animal plant or fungi origin and has necessary nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, and fats. These nutrients are the main source of energy for an organism and the main way in which the body uses them. When the body cannot use these nutrients for its use, the cells in the body to use stored fats as a last resort.
In order to maintain the body in a healthy state, a balance of nutrients must be achieved. The foods that provide all the required nutrients must be consumed on a regular basis. There are various types of foods that provide the necessary nutrients and these include proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fats. All these nutrients together form the various food groups, which are:
The first group of food, known as the carbohydrates, contains two kinds of molecules, namely, glucose and galactose. Galactose is the sugar that is found in certain dairy products like milk and cheese. This sugar is used by the body in order to produce energy, for example, when the individual needs to perform some physical activity. When the intake of glucose in the blood becomes high, due to the intake of refined carbohydrates, it results in hyperglycemia. High levels of blood glucose result in the accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries and the development of a cardio-vascular disease.
The second type of food, the fats, consists of three different molecules, namely, triglycerides, lipids, and phospholipids. The lipids are found in both plants and animals. Phospholipids are contained in fats, as they form the storage medium for the nutrients that are not soluble in the blood. The fats that are most commonly associated with a cardio-vascular disease are those that are found in butter, margarine, processed foods, fried foods, junk foods, etc.
The third group, which consists of the nutrients in plants, consists of many different substances that are very important for the development of healthy cells and tissues. A good example of such food substance is vitamin E. Another food substance that has many health benefits is beta carotene, which is found in carrots, spinach, and apples. It is necessary for a healthy body, as it helps protect the retina, and is an important nutrient that can be obtained from carrots and spinach.
In conclusion, all of us need to pay more attention to the way in which we eat. People who eat healthy and live longer have less problems with cardiovascular disease, obesity, and Type II diabetes.
